Ratio Calculator: Simplify & Solve Ratios

Simplify a ratio to lowest terms or solve for a missing value in a proportion such as A:B = C:X.

About the ratio calculator

A ratio compares two quantities. To simplify one, divide both terms by their greatest common factor. To solve a proportion, cross-multiply: if A:B = C:X then X = B × C ÷ A. Use it for recipes, scale models, mixing, maps and aspect ratios.

Formula

Simplify: divide A and B by GCF(A, B). Solve: X = B × C ÷ A.

Frequently asked questions

How do I simplify a ratio?

Divide both numbers by their greatest common factor. 24:36 divided by 12 gives 2:3.

How do I scale a recipe?

Use "Solve": if 2 cups serve 4 people, A = 2, B = 4 and C = the number of people you need.
